Duo Duo Zhuang was born in 1949 and grew up in Shanghai China.
Her mother was an opera singer, father was composer.
She loves to paint since she was a child.

She painted her first offical oil portrait of Mao (about 300x180cm), at her age of 18, when she served in the People's Liberation Army - PLA 1964-1969 in China.
The portrait was hung at the main entrance of the clinic in the Headquarters of East Sea Fleet Shanghai China.

Won twice nation's championship of swimming among the teenagers in China 1964 and 1965.

Worked as a machinist at the machinery factory No.4 in the suburb of Shanghai China during the "Cultural Revolution" 1969-1978. At that time, she treasured limited spare time going out to countryside often to paint landscape, and painted lots of portraits of her fellows in the factory, despite of hard physical work at the factory .

After “Cultural Revolution” she worked as a painting teacher at the "Children´s Palace" --the well known school of art and science for children and teenagers in Shanghai 1978-1989


Won a scholarship from DALOON FOUNDATION and studied at
the Jutland Fine Art Academy (Det Jyske kunst akademi) in Denmark 1990-1993.

Has been living in Denmark since 1990
Danish citizenship since 1999

She held and took part in many solo and group exhibitions in Denmark, England, Germany and Shanghai China.

Both of her portraits Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark and the Frederik , Crown Prince of Denmark, were hung with Royal Life Guards (Denmark), and were shown at the Rosenborg museum , and published in the book “Portraits of a Queen” ("Potrætter af en Dronning" ISBN: 978-87-992835-8-3 )

My mother and father holded me in front of the school
where my father taught the music. 1949 Shanghai China.

I was born in a musical family in 1949, Shanghai China, That was a trubulent time around 1949, my mother coulden't get enuogh food when she was expecting me, so I was so little and so weak when I was born, but that is “ok”, I survived.





When I was a child, I loved to draw and paint, In my kindergarten, there was a blackboard, I always drew my fairytale which was most about princesses on the blackborad, toys were not interested me. I drew on the street, drew on the wall, even on the wall at the home, drew on the wasted paper... in short, every where if there were an empty space.
My parents never forbade me to draw on the wall at home, they diden't think that did home untidy, on the contrary, they thought it was fun, especially my father who loved to se my painting and drawing.
I asked my mother to teach me to knit at that time, and I knited a long scarf to my doll. I tried self to sew clothes to my doll also, I thought those things were most intereting.

I was the eldest child in my family. I was together with my two brothers and a little sister in my arms. 1955 Shanghai China

We four brothers and sisters given the name by my father, our names are Duo Duo, Re re, Mi mi and Fa fa. If we have more brothers or sisters, they will be named So so, La la, Te te, ...etc. but we haven't.

1964, when I was 15, I was chosen by the army's swim-team. So I became a professional swimmer.
The army in China was so big, just like a big society, besides troops and weapons, there are hospitals, universities, foreign language institute, art academy, film institute, sports-teams, opera, theater, orchestra, etc. Many intellactuals as artists, musicians, actors and actresses, writers, teachers, professors, doctors, etc. went in the army's uniforms and worked for the army. I went in the navy's uniform, but knew nothing about navy but swim.

1966, the Cultural Revolution started, we were commanded to do nothing but join the political meeting. At that time, people were forbidden to paint anything but the portait of Mao. So, I painted my first portrait, that was Mao. During the Cultural Revolution when I was in the Army 1968

In 1969, I was commanded to leave army, and was sent to a mechanical factory out side of Shanghai, and worked as a machinist. It was a very dark period in my life, I was very ill for several years, due to hard work and depression. I had worked at the factory until 1978. Ten years! unbelivable.

1978, two years later after Cultural Revolution finished, I fought to back to Shanghai, worked as a teacher at the "Children's Palace"---the well-known school of art and science for children and teenagers. I was there until 1989. I painted many pictures for children, and always got the inspiration from children and children's painting. that was fun.

   1989, I left the China, via Singapore and Hong kong, then came to Denmark.
I have been living in Denmak since 1990.
